The South Shore Citizens for a Prosperous Future is a network of organizations and individuals united to strengthen public services and infrastructures in the South Shore communities of Milwaukee County so that families and businesses can thrive. Participants include local officials, business persons, labor leaders, as well as representatives from civic groups, community organizations, issue organizations and religious congregations.

The South Shore Citizens believe that state government plays a key role in sustaining effective public structures. These include both physical infrastructure, such as roads, parks, sewers and airports, as well as social systems that address health, public safety, education, economic development, legal issues and support for people in need.

The capacity to maintain good public services and strong infrastructures requires sufficient state investment to meet existing needs and adapt to changing social and economic conditions. This investment must be supported by a broad revenue base that is fair to all taxpayers and adequate to sustain the local core services we value.

South Shore Citizens’ Goals:

1) Fortify community awareness around the importance of the public sector and why flaws in the state’s revenue system are leading to local budget problems.

2) Engage citizens from diverse backgrounds to participate in the South Shore Citizens’ network so the group has the capability to press for more state investment in the south shore communities.

3) Develop a state fiscal policy agenda that will expand the revenue base and increase fairness to all taxpayers by reducing local reliance on property taxes.

Local Alliance Hosts Legislative Forum on The State Budget

rpes

Over 45 residents of St. Francis, Cudahy, South Milwaukee and Oak Creek met with State Senator Jeff Plale and State Representatives Mark Honadel and Christine Sinicki.

There was a short presentation about the impact of state revenue decisions on local communities and schools and the magnitude of the state budget deficit and proposed cuts and revenue increases.

This was the first legislative forum sponsored by the South Shore Citizens for a Prosperous Future which is composed of a politically diverse group of business, labor and religious leaders, local elected officials and retirees.

Both residents and legislative leaders weighed in about ways to preserve strong public structures and prevent increases in local property taxes and fees. Ten revenue alternatives were presented and there were frank answers to the following questions:

• What, if any, revenue options on the handout do you like more than cuts affecting the community?

• What, if any, revenue options on the handout do you like less than cuts affecting the community?
